From the Earth to the Moon, Chapter 24 summary

Chapter 24 of 51 · Part 1 · 4 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 24, the Gun Club funds a huge telescope at Long’s Peak so observers can detect its small projectile on the moon. Engineers complete the instrument despite severe transport problems, and its first observations confirm the moon’s volcanic character while also producing important astronomical results.

What happens

  1. The Gun Club finances an instrument capable of revealing objects more than nine feet across on the moon.
  2. Existing telescopes lack sufficient power, so Cambridge Observatory plans a reflector with magnification of 48,000 times.
  3. The club chooses Long’s Peak to keep both the telescope and the Columbiad within the Union.
  4. Engineers transport massive components through difficult country and complete the reflector near September’s end, within a year.
  5. The telescope reveals no unexpected lunar features, but astronomers measure stars and Mr. Clark resolves the Crab Nebula.
