Music pulls Franz toward another life

Lux presents Franz as shy, funny, warm and fierce about his art, rather than as a sentimental drunkard. Nearly every song grows from something he lives through, making music the thread that holds his story together.

What this book is
What does a boy do when his father wants a schoolmaster and his head is full of music? In this novel by Joseph Aug. Lux, young Franz Schubert sings up to high C in the court choir of Vienna, while a furious Italian composer snatches the notebook from his hands.
Lux, an Austrian writer who died in 1947, frees Schubert from the false picture of a sentimental drunkard. He shows a man who is shy, funny, warm and fierce about his art. Nearly every song is tied to a moment of his life, so you hear the music behind the story.

Key point 1 of 10
A choirboy no teacher can teach
The novel opens in a church gallery, where the court choirboys sing like the carved angels above them. One voice climbs to high C, and it belongs to Franzl Schubert. His conductor Ruczizka laughs that the dear Lord taught him, because there is nothing left to add.
The court composer Salieri catches the boy scribbling notes and seizes the pages. He finds a small piece built on a Mozart sonata. Salieri hated everything about Mozart, so he rages in Italian. Then, to the boy's confusion, he orders Ruczizka to drill him in counterpoint.
His father, the schoolmaster of Liechtental, answers with the cane. Yet he sees that the Imperial Chapel offers a free school place, and father and son walk to the city. Franz comes first in the examination and enters the Konvikt, a bare stone boarding school. Music and loyal friends like Spaun make the gray years bearable.
Talent shows itself early and finds its way even through harsh teachers.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
