What this book is

What happens to a boy when a stranger on a train looks at his face and sees a killer? In Frank Merriwell's Bravery, a young traveler on his way to meet his friends is arrested at gunpoint as Black Harry, a teenage outlaw who has shot a banker in front of his daughter. Within hours a crowd wants him hanged.

This is a dime-novel adventure by Burt L. Standish, the pen name of Gilbert Patten, who wrote the Frank Merriwell series of the 1890s. Frank has inherited a fortune from his uncle Asher, and the will sends him around the world with his guardian Professor Scotch and his Irish schoolmate Barney Mulloy. You get mobs, an airship, a hidden outlaw village, a lost child, a grizzly and a gang of counterfeiters, all in quick scenes.

A stranger on a train names Frank a killer

Frank Merriwell rides west from Oklahoma City to meet Professor Scotch and Barney Mulloy at El Reno. He reads a newspaper story about Black Harry, a young outlaw who has robbed an express train and shot a banker named Robert Dawson.

A thin man with close-set eyes and a long pointed nose slides into the seat beside him. He gives his name as Walker and fires off question after question. He asks where Frank is going and whether he carries a revolver. Frank answers shortly and keeps his temper. Behind them a peddler named Solomon Rosenbum crowds a dandy in a comic scene, and the whole car laughs.

Then the peddler hands Walker a revolver to admire. Walker presses it to Frank's head and shouts that Frank is Black Harry. He claims to be the famous detective Burchel Jones. Frank offers cards and letters, but the detective calls them a trick. He handcuffs Frank and wires ahead for the banker's daughter to meet the train. A hasty accusation can be as dangerous as a gun.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
