Who it’s for

You will love this book if you enjoy village life drawn with warmth and humour, friendships that last for years, and quiet rebels who trust their own judgment.

What this book is

Picture a thirteen-year-old boy in an attic at dusk. A basket of beech logs stands beside him, and he holds a book about James Watt and the steam engine so close to his eyes that he forgets the world. This is Fenn Kass, the sexton's son in the Luxembourg village of Wiesing. Tomorrow he leaves for a church boarding school, because everyone has decided he will become a priest.

Fenn Kass is a novel by Batty Weber, a Luxembourg writer who died in 1940. It follows one clear-eyed village boy from childhood through school and seminary and into his first post. It asks what you owe your parents, your village and your church, and what you owe yourself.

A sexton's son carries wood and dreams

The story opens on the Three-Country Road, which runs across little Luxembourg between elms and plane trees. Wiesing sits on it, with a grand old inn and a stone cross between pollarded poplars. On feast days the procession stops at that cross, and the pastor lifts the monstrance over bowed heads.

On a September evening Fenn finishes his last chore at the rectory. He hauls beech logs to the attic for Miss Gretchen, the pastor's gentle sister. Up among the drying laundry he finds a crate of old books and reads about Denis Papin and James Watt until she calls him down. She gives him a big pear and promises to ask her brother about the book.

Pastor Reining is a learned man who spends on books what others spend on wine. He gives the volume away with a smile. It was his own school prize, forty years old, and the label is still inside. He asks only that Fenn not neglect his Latin. The scene shows the boy's two pulls at once: the machine that fascinates him and the church that surrounds him.

Fenn's father, the grumpy and proud sexton Mathias, wants a priest in the family. So does his mother. Nobody has really asked the boy. That night he rings the evening bell with one shy bimbim and stops at the mission cross, sensing that a chapter of his life is closing. Nobody has ever seen him cry. His feelings are like shifting water, but his outer self is a firm shore. From the first page, Fenn's curiosity points one way and his future points another.
