Chapter 36 of 57 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 36, Gabriel Oak warns that rain threatens the uncovered harvest, but Troy dismisses him and makes the farmhands too drunk to help. Guided by signs in the weather and animals, Oak returns to protect Bathsheba’s valuable grain alone, covering some stacks and beginning work on the rest.

What happens

  1. Oak sees signs of approaching rain and warns Troy during the harvest celebration, but Troy refuses to act.
  2. Troy dismisses Bathsheba’s objections to stronger drink, sends the women home, and threatens men who refuse to join him.
  3. Animal behavior confirms Oak’s fears, and he calculates that the exposed grain is worth a sum of money.
  4. Oak returns to find the farmhands helplessly drunk, gets directions to thatching tools, and extinguishes the dangerous candles.
  5. He obtains the granary key from Susan Tall and uses four waterproof coverings to secure two wheat stacks.
  6. Oak arranges sheaves to protect the remaining wheat and begins thatching the barley as the storm clouds gather.
