Chapter 19 of 55 · Volume 3 · 5 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, Emma accepts Harriet Smith’s love for Robert Martin, learns the truth about her parentage, and watches them marry as their friendship becomes less close. Emma’s own wedding remains uncertain until nearby thefts make Mr. Woodhouse welcome Mr. Knightley’s protection, allowing the marriage to proceed.

What happens

  1. After Harriet returns from London, Emma becomes convinced that she genuinely loves Robert Martin rather than Mr. Knightley.
  2. Harriet’s father proves to be a tradesman, and Emma recognizes Robert Martin’s good judgment as she welcomes him at Hartfield.
  3. Emma and Harriet grow less close, and Harriet marries Robert Martin before September ends.
  4. Emma and Mr. Knightley plan an autumn wedding, but Mr. Woodhouse’s distress makes Emma hesitate.
  5. Nearby poultry thefts make Mr. Woodhouse value Mr. Knightley’s protection, so he willingly agrees to a wedding date.
  6. Emma and Mr. Knightley marry without display; Mrs. Elton criticizes the ceremony, but their friends’ hopes for their happiness are fulfilled.
