Who it’s for

You will love this book if you enjoy a lifelike heroine, quiet irony, and stories of marriage and society told through small scenes. It suits readers who like tales of manners and secrets.

What this book is

A girl in a sailor smock is burying gooseberry skins in a pond with her friends. Then her mother calls her into the house and says that a baron has asked for her hand. Within a day Effi Briest is engaged, and nothing in her life will be simple again. What does it cost a lively seventeen-year-old to marry a man she admires and fears more than she loves?

Theodor Fontane published Effi Briest in the 1890s, near the end of a long life as a journalist and writer. The novel follows one young woman from a manor in Brandenburg to a lonely seaside town in Pomerania, told with wit and a dry eye for polite society. The ending stays untold.

A girl at play is offered a husband

The novel opens in the garden of the Briest manor at Hohen-Cremmen. Effi sits beside her mother, sewing an altar cloth, and jumps up every few minutes to do comic exercises. Fontane draws her in a few strokes: quick, kind, clever, and restless.

Her friends come through the churchyard gate, and Effi tells them about a visitor due that day, Geert von Innstetten. Long ago he courted her mother, lost her to Herr von Briest, and left to study law. The girls bury the gooseberry skins in the pond with a mock funeral. Effi remarks that in old times unfaithful wives were drowned from boats like this one.

Then her mother calls her in and tells her that Innstetten has just asked for her hand. He is a man of standing and more than twice her age. That same day they are engaged, and Effi tells her friends that anyone is right if he is noble, has a position, and looks well. Effi says yes to a rank and a future, not yet to a man.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Effi Briest

What is Effi Briest about?

It follows a spirited seventeen-year-old who marries an older, ambitious baron and moves to a lonely Pomeranian town. The novel traces her loneliness, her fears, a haunted house, and the pressure of society's rules on a young wife.

Who is Rollo in Effi Briest?

Rollo is Innstetten's large Newfoundland dog. He guards Effi on her frightened nights in Kessin, accompanies her walks, and becomes her most dependable companion. Characters often treat his loyalty as a quiet contrast to human behavior.

Is Effi Briest a true story?

It is a novel, but Fontane drew on the manners and gossip of the Prussian upper class that he knew well. He published it in the 1890s, and it reflects the honor code and social rules of that world.

What is the haunted house in Effi Briest?

It is the old district administrator's house in Kessin, where Effi hears dragging steps upstairs and finds a paper Chinese man glued to a chair. Fontane never explains the haunting, which lets each character read it differently.

What is the main message of Effi Briest?

Fontane shows how rigid social rules, ambition, and a lack of tenderness can shape lives more than wickedness does. The book asks what a society owes to the person who falls short of its code, and leaves you to decide.
