Dracula, Chapter 20 summary

Chapter 20 of 27 · 24 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 20, Jonathan Harker traces Dracula’s boxes to several London addresses, including a house in Piccadilly, while continuing to exclude Mina from the investigation. Seward suspects that Renfield has contact with the Count, and the chapter closes with an attendant reporting Renfield bloodied on his floor.

What happens

  1. Joseph Smollet identifies two delivery addresses and helps Jonathan find Sam Bloxam, who transports nine boxes to Piccadilly.
  2. Jonathan locates the house, and the estate agents agree to send its purchase details to Lord Godalming.
  3. Jonathan keeps the investigation from Mina despite her pallor and distress, while the men postpone action until morning.
  4. Seward questions Renfield about life and souls, suspects the Count’s involvement, and finds him catching flies again with Van Helsing.
  5. The agents’ letter identifies the Piccadilly buyer as Count de Ville, and the men prepare to destroy the earth’s protective usefulness.
  6. An attendant reports finding Renfield face down and bloody after a yell, and Seward leaves to attend him.
