In Chapter 2, Don Quixote leaves home secretly to seek adventures, but worries that he has not received knighthood and decides to obtain it from the first person he meets. After an uneventful day, he reaches an inn that he mistakes for a castle, where ordinary hospitality strengthens his fantasies without resolving his concern about knighthood.
What happens
- Don Quixote leaves before daylight on Rocinante, then remembers that he cannot properly undertake adventures without first becoming a knight.
- He decides to seek knighthood from the first person he meets and imagines a grand account of his deeds.
- At dusk, hungry and exhausted, he reaches an inn and mistakes its building, guests, and nearby horn for features of a castle.
- Two women laugh at his speech and appearance, but the innkeeper welcomes him politely and stables Rocinante.
- The women remove some armor, but Don Quixote refuses to cut the ribbons that hold his helmet in place.
- Others help him eat and drink, while a visitor’s whistle strengthens his castle fantasy and his missing knighthood still troubles him.
