Who it’s for

You will love this if you enjoy pastoral love stories, Greek myth and the countryside seasons, or if you are curious about how a nineteenth century novelist imagined the oldest courts of Asia.

What this book is

Picture a hunter on the island of Lesbos who wanders into a grove sacred to the Nymphs. There he finds a painting full of love: babies left in the wild, shepherds caring for them, young people falling for each other, robbers and an enemy raid. He finds someone to explain every scene and writes it all down.

That is how Longus, a Greek writer of the later ancient world, opens Daphnis and Chloe. This volume pairs it with Legends of the Ancient East by the Spanish writer Juan Valera. You get a kiss that sets a boy's heart on fire, pirates and charging cows, an old herdsman who names Love, and two unfinished tales of kings and dreams.

A goat and a ewe raise two foundlings

The story opens in the countryside near Mytilene on Lesbos. A goatherd named Lamon sees one of his goats slip away from her own kid. He follows her and finds her nursing a baby boy, who lies in a purple blanket with a gold clasp beside a small ivory-hilted dagger.

Lamon thinks of taking the valuables and leaving the child. Then he feels ashamed to show less pity than a goat. He and his wife Myrtale adopt the boy and call him Daphnis.

Two years later the shepherd Dryas finds a ewe suckling a baby girl in a cave of the Nymphs. She wears embroidered cloths and gold bracelets. Dryas and his wife Nape raise her as Chloe. When Daphnis is fifteen, both old men dream that the Nymphs hand the pair to a winged boy with a bow, who orders them to become shepherds. The fathers obey the gods.

Love in this story begins with kindness shown to the helpless.
