  • She fusses over Randolph Miller but cannot control him, and relies on Eugenio to manage their travels.

Who Mrs Miller is

Mrs Miller travels through Europe with her daughter Daisy and her son Randolph Miller. She is gentle, vague and often anxious about her health, while her husband remains in America on business.

The family stays in grand hotels, but they do not understand the social customs around them. Their courier, Eugenio, manages their rooms and baggage, and Mrs Miller and Daisy speak of him with respect.

Mrs Miller and the others in the story

Mrs Miller gives Daisy considerable freedom, without being able to guide or restrain her. When Daisy proposes visiting the Castle of Chillon with Frederick Winterbourne, her mother does not wish to join them.

In Rome, she is again unable to stop Daisy from going out with Mr Giovanelli. Her concern for Randolph is more fussy, but she cannot control her outspoken son either.
