- Sir John Drax confirms the diagnosis and warns Mark against continuing his work in Bethnal Green.
- At the Mission, Mark destroys two letters to Betty and wishes for death rather than bind her to an invalid.
- David Ross visits after recognizing Drax’s address, challenges Mark’s despair, and invites him to recover at his lodge.
- Mark travels north with Ross after sending Betty a misleading letter that suggests religious work and celibacy take priority.
- Betty reads the letter and tells Lady Randolph that Mark prefers his work to her.
