Ben-Hur, Part 8, Chapter 6 summary

Part 8, Chapter 6 of 88 · Book 1 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 6, Ben-Hur returns home, where Iras mocks his hopes for the Nazarene and threatens to expose his resistance to Rome unless he pays Messala twenty-six talents. Her account helps him recognize that the Nazarene’s mission is not political, while her demands end their attachment and draw his defiance.

What happens

  1. Ben-Hur returns to his father’s house and meets Iras, whose cold hostility replaces her former affection.
  2. Iras mocks the Nazarene’s refusal to claim political power, prompting Ben-Hur to recognize a mission beyond conquest.
  3. She threatens to expose his military preparations and other secrets, then admits learning them from him and by overhearing Sheik Ilderim.
  4. Iras asks him to restore Messala’s lost fortune, then reveals her allegiance and demands twenty-six talents by noon tomorrow.
  5. Ben-Hur refuses, declares his family restored and his wealth protected, and sends Iras away with a defiant message for Messala.
