Part 4, Chapter 2 of 88 · Book 1 · 5 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 2, Ben-Hur arrives in Antioch, learns where Simonides conducts business, and sends his baggage toward the citadel before changing his destination. He takes lodging near the merchant instead, hoping to learn about his mother and Tirzah and determined to find them if they remain alive.

What happens

  1. As the ship approaches Antioch, a Hebrew passenger describes the surrounding mountains, Daphne, the city walls, and important buildings.
  2. The ship docks beneath the wall, and Ben-Hur asks the Hebrew where to find Simonides.
  3. The Hebrew identifies Simonides as Antioch’s richest merchant and directs Ben-Hur to his riverside business beneath the bridge.
  4. Ben-Hur orders two porters toward the citadel but remains absorbed in the merchant’s story despite the magnificent streets.
  5. He changes direction, takes an inn near the bridge, and spends the night thinking about his mother and Tirzah.
