Part 3, Chapter 4 of 88 · Book 1 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 4, Arrius learns the pirates’ position, divides his fleet to trap them, and prepares for battle while Ben-Hur rows without knowing their mission. When the tribune exempts him from chains, Ben-Hur takes this favor as grounds for hope of freedom and reunion with his family.

What happens

  1. After inspecting his hundred galleys, Arrius receives news from a transport commander that the pirates have entered waters between Euboea and Hellas.
  2. Arrius divides his fleet into two equal forces to approach the pirates from opposite ends of the channel.
  3. Ben-Hur tracks the ship’s direction through sunlight and recognizes battle preparations when incense reaches the rowing cabin.
  4. As the hortator chains the oarsmen, Arrius intervenes and orders that Ben-Hur remain free of irons.
  5. Ben-Hur rows with renewed strength and imagines his family restored, leaving no room in his happiness for revenge.
  6. Before dawn, a messenger wakes Arrius with news that the pirates are near, and he orders the marines ready.
