Balsamo, the Magician; Or, the Memoirs of a Physician in short
Joseph Balsamo uses mesmerism, a gift for reading people, and a talent for staging. You keep a vivid picture of Paris and Versailles in the last years of Louis XV, and a sense of how people hunt for power through money, ideas, love, or fear. The Dubarry chapters are funny, the Rousseau chapters are tender, and small slights in a country house grow into large forces.
What Balsamo, the Magician; Or, the Memoirs of a Physician is about
What would you do if a man walked into a room of three hundred hooded ghosts, drank from a skull, put a pistol to his own head, and then told them the whole show was a trick? That is how this novel opens. On the sixth of May, 1770, a rider leaves himself unarmed and follows a guiding light into a ruined castle.
Balsamo, the Magician was written by Alexandre Dumas with his partner Auguste Maquet. It is the first book of a cycle about the years before the French Revolution. Joseph Balsamo is a mesmerist, an alchemist, and the chosen leader of a secret order that wants to topple the French monarchy within a generation.
Who it’s for. This book suits readers who love secret societies, scheming courtiers, mesmerism and alchemy, and the glittering court of Louis XV.

A stranger passes the tests on Thunder Mount
The novel opens at sunset. A rider named Balsamo leaves his horse in a pine wood and throws away every weapon, even his pocketknife. Then he walks into the forest with nothing but his nerve, and a floating light leads him on.
A cold hand takes his, and he is led blindfolded to the ruined Castle of Donnerberg. Inside, a black hall holds three hundred shrouded figures and seven chairs for their chiefs. The chiefs make him swear to cut every tie to home and ruler. Then come the tests. A bound man is stabbed before his eyes. He drinks a skull of red liquid to the last drop. A pistol is held to his temple, and the hammer falls on an empty flash.
Then Balsamo calmly stops the game. The dead man was alive, the drink was wine, and the pistol was a trick. He names each chief and shows a diamond star on his chest. The phantoms bow to the master they have waited for.
The man who has studied the room before he enters it can walk through any trial.

Questions about Balsamo, the Magician; Or, the Memoirs of a Physician
What is Balsamo the Magician about?
It follows Joseph Balsamo, a mesmerist and alchemist who leads a secret order and plans to bring down the French monarchy before the Revolution. The story moves from a ruined castle in Germany to Taverney, Versailles, and Paris.
Who is Joseph Balsamo in the book?
He is a traveler from the East who also uses the names Acharat and Count Fenix. He claims to have lived many lives, practices mesmerism and alchemy, and is chosen to lead a secret order against the French throne.
What does L. P. D. mean on Balsamo's star?
The three letters stand for a Latin phrase that means trample the lilies underfoot. The lilies are the emblem of the Bourbon kings, so the phrase is the secret order's command to destroy the monarchy.
Is Balsamo the Magician a true story?
It is a novel, though it uses real people and events, such as Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Rousseau, and the dauphin's wedding in 1770. Balsamo and the secret order are partly based on real figures of the period, and the plot is invented.
Is the novel easy to follow without prior knowledge of French history?
Yes, the story explains its people through lively scenes and dialogue. Each chapter is short, with a clear event such as a storm, a feast, or a flight, so a reader can follow the plot without background.
