Key ideas

Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope · Sepharial1 of 9
  1. Key idea 1

    A birth becomes a chart

Sepharial begins with a practical promise: the moment of birth can be drawn as a diagram, and a beginner can learn to read it. His subject is genethliacal astrology, the doctrine of birth charts. The starting point is the set of nine bodies he calls the planets.

He argues that astrology is a science because it uses measured heavenly positions. Rather than asking for belief alone, he invites testing. That claim shapes the manual: learn the method, build the chart, and examine what its rules predict.

Who it’s for

You will enjoy this book if you love old manuals with clear rules, like working things out with tables and a pencil, or wonder how astrologers of 1900 read a chart.

What this book is

What if the moment you were born could be drawn as a diagram with a pair of compasses and a table? Sepharial, the pen name of a British astrologer who died in 1932, says it can. In this manual he teaches a beginner to build a birth chart and read it, step by step.

The book deals with genethliacal astrology, the doctrine of birth charts. Sepharial argues that astrology is a science because it rests on the measured positions of heavenly bodies, and he asks you to test the claim yourself. Begin with the nine bodies he calls the planets.

Nine bodies, each with its own nature

Sepharial begins with the cast of the heavens. He lists the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Astrology measures everything from the centre of the Earth, because the Earth is taken as the passive receiver of influence.

The core of the chapter is a portrait of each body. Neptune brings a highly strung, nervous temperament. Uranus gives an eccentric and unpredictable mind. Saturn makes a person sober and enduring, with success that is slow but sure. Jupiter brings cheerfulness and good fortune, and Mars brings ambition and a combative streak. Venus brings taste and gentleness. Mercury makes people businesslike, and it takes on the nature of the planet it is closest to by aspect. The Moon brings changeability, and the Sun brings pride and honour.

Sepharial adds a physical type for each planet. Saturn people are dark and lean with deep-set eyes. Jupiter people are full-bodied with high foreheads. He sets an exercise. Watch people in the street and see whether the planet's character fits. Jupiter and Venus are benefic, while Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are malefic.

Learn each planet as a fixed bundle of traits, because every later rule combines them.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope

What is Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope about?

It is a beginner's manual by Sepharial on birth charts. It teaches the planets, signs, houses and aspects, shows how to draw a chart from an ephemeris and a Table of Houses, and explains how to read and time events.

What does genethliacal astrology mean?

It is the branch of astrology that deals with nativities, meaning the chart cast for a person's moment and place of birth. Sepharial says this is the branch students should study first, and it is the only branch this book covers.

What are the houses and aspects in a horoscope?

The houses are twelve sections of the sky, each linked to an area of life such as money, marriage or travel. Aspects are angles between planets, such as the trine and square, which Sepharial treats as good or bad.

Can a beginner follow the chart calculations?

Yes, the method comes in clear steps with a worked example for May 1, 1890, in London. The book supplies tables of houses and planet positions, so a reader with an ephemeris and compasses can follow along.

What is the main message of Sepharial's manual?

The author claims that the planets' positions at birth match character and fortune, and that anyone can test this by casting charts. He also stresses that astrology should be practical, and that effort and training still matter.
