Chapter 13 of 37 · 9 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Phileas Fogg and his companions attempt to rescue Aouda, but guards prevent them from entering the temple before her sacrifice. Passepartout saves her by pretending to be her dead husband rising from the burning pyre, and the party escapes on the elephant despite gunfire from pursuing soldiers.

What happens

  1. The Parsee guide agrees to help and explains how Aouda’s forced marriage and recapture leave her facing sacrifice.
  2. The companions approach the pagoda after dark, but armed guards block its entrances and remain awake until midnight.
  3. Passepartout and the guide loosen bricks at the rear, but cries interrupt their work and guards secure that approach.
  4. Fogg refuses to leave, while Passepartout privately develops another plan as dawn approaches.
  5. As the pyre burns, Passepartout impersonates the dead rajah and carries Aouda away before the terrified crowd.
  6. The party escapes on the elephant, outdistancing bullets and arrows after the priests discover the deception.
