Key point 1 of 9

A boy dreams of dragons and Pilate

It is evening in the Winkelried house at Stans. Arnold sits on his mother's lap, watching the moon rise over Pilatus. He asks why the mountain bears the name of the Roman governor who condemned Christ.

His mother tells the old legend. After Pilate died in disgrace, storms followed his body from river to river, until it was thrown into a small lake high on the mountain. If anyone throws stones into the lake, storms burst over the valley.

Then Arnold asks about his grandfather, Schrutan. A dragon lived in a cave and drove people from their homes. Schrutan threw a long spear into its throat and finished it with his sword. But the monster's poisonous blood dripped onto his body, and he died a few days later.

This moves the boy more than any prize could. On Good Friday he and his friend Florian Häbli climb to the lake. Florian runs off at the first splash, but Arnold throws stone after stone until the guardian drives him home.

A small boy's stubborn courage already points toward the grown man's choice.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
