Part 3, Chapter 32 of 239 · 5 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 32, Levin and Nikolay quarrel over Levin’s labor project while avoiding an honest discussion of Nikolay’s approaching death, and Nikolay leaves despite his brother’s apology. Levin then travels abroad, preoccupied with death, but holds more tightly to his work as a way to endure life.

What happens

  1. Nikolay becomes irritable, while Levin struggles to speak naturally because both brothers avoid acknowledging the fear of death.
  2. On the third day, Nikolay attacks Levin’s project, compares it with communism, and accuses him of vanity.
  3. Levin loses his temper because Nikolay’s criticism touches his own doubts about the project.
  4. Nikolay insists on leaving, but the brothers share a sincere, tearful farewell.
  5. Three days afterward, Levin travels abroad and meets Shtcherbatsky, whose cheerful outlook contrasts with his own thoughts of death.
  6. Despite his despair, Levin clings to his project as his remaining guide through life.
