Part 2, Chapter 26 of 239 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 26, Alexey Alexandrovitch buries himself in official duties and refuses to confront his conviction that Anna deceives him, while a doctor finds his health seriously strained. He plans a visit to Anna before the races and brings his secretary, avoiding a private meeting while preserving appearances.

What happens

  1. Alexey Alexandrovitch maintains outward marital routines but grows colder toward Anna and their son, using work to suppress painful thoughts.
  2. Countess Lidia Ivanovna questions Anna’s friendships, but he rejects her warning and avoids her despite his private certainty of betrayal.
  3. On the race day, he plans to visit Anna, give her money, and fulfill his obligation to attend the races.
  4. A doctor examines him at Lidia Ivanovna’s request and prescribes exercise, less mental effort, and freedom from worry.
  5. The doctor tells Sludin that official work and an additional burden strain Alexey Alexandrovitch almost beyond endurance.
  6. After receiving visitors and completing business, Alexey Alexandrovitch invites his secretary to accompany him to Anna’s villa and the races.
