Anabasis, Part 1, no. 30, Part VI summary

Part 1, no. 30, Part VI of 56 · Book 1 · 6 min to read the part

In VI, Cheirisophus strikes the village headman, who escapes, and the Hellenes reach a mountain pass blocked by enemy forces. Xenophon proposes taking unguarded heights rather than attacking directly, and volunteers carry out the plan at night, helping the army defeat the defenders and reach well-stocked villages.

What happens

  1. Xenophon transfers the village headman to Cheirisophus and places the headman’s son with Episthenes of Amphipolis.
  2. Cheirisophus strikes the headman for finding no villages, and the unbound guide escapes during the night.
  3. After further marching, the army finds Chalybes, Taochians, and Phasianians blocking a mountain pass.
  4. Cleanor urges an immediate attack, but Xenophon recommends secretly occupying unguarded heights while threatening the road.
  5. Volunteers led by Aristonymus of Methydria and Nicomachus of Oeta occupy the mountain at night.
  6. The Hellenes attack along the heights and road, rout the defenders, destroy captured shields, and descend to supplied villages.
