Anabasis, Book 6, Part IV summary

Book 6, Part IV of 56 · 7 min to read the part

In IV, the Greeks restore their united command at Calpe Haven, but unfavorable sacrifices block their departure as food runs short and suspicion surrounds Xenophon. Neon leads a disastrous search for provisions, Xenophon rescues the survivors, and a Bithynian attack leaves the army keeping armed watch through the night.

What happens

  1. The Greeks camp on the beach at Calpe Haven, resisting any move that suggests founding a city rather than returning home.
  2. After favorable sacrifices, Xenophon leads the army out to bury the dead and raise a memorial for those they cannot find.
  3. An assembly restores the former military organization and makes proposals to divide the army punishable by death.
  4. Repeated unfavorable sacrifices prevent departure and food gathering, while soldiers suspect Xenophon of trying to establish a settlement.
  5. Neon takes two thousand men to seek provisions, but cavalry attacks their scattered party and kills at least five hundred.
  6. Xenophon rescues the survivors; a surprise Bithynian attack at supper forces the Greeks to strengthen their guards and remain armed overnight.
