A Tale of Two Cities, Book 2: The Golden Thread, Chapter 3 summary

Book 2: The Golden Thread, Chapter 3 of 45 · 20 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 3, Mr. Darnay faces a treason charge supported by disputed witnesses and Miss Manette’s reluctant account of their meeting aboard a ship. Mr. Carton’s resemblance to the prisoner undermines an identification, and the jury acquits Darnay despite the prosecution’s demands and the Judge’s unfavorable summary.

What happens

  1. The prosecution demands conviction, but questioning exposes weaknesses in John Barsad’s character and Roger Cly’s testimony.
  2. Mr. Jarvis Lorry cannot identify the prisoner as a mail coach passenger but remembers their shared sea crossing.
  3. Miss Manette describes the prisoner’s kindness, private business, exchanged papers, and joking comparison of George Washington with George the Third.
  4. Doctor Manette cannot recall the crossing because his memory remains blank across that period.
  5. Mr. Carton draws attention to his resemblance to the prisoner, allowing Mr. Stryver to undermine an identification witness.
  6. After Miss Manette leaves in distress and the jury withdraws, Darnay receives an acquittal; Jerry carries the news.
