Key ideas
Key idea 1
Handy starts with borrowed resources
With theaters shut for the summer, Handy refuses to let an empty pocket end his acting season. He gathers a borrowed tent, a friend's boat, printer's credit, and seven players for a coastal tour. His resources are small, but his confidence is not.
Their first performance brings a sheriff asking for a license. Handy talks him into a saloon, then escapes toward the boat when payment becomes a problem. His adventures begin with a habit that drives the comedy: treating trouble as something quick thinking can solve.

What this book is
What do you do when the summer is over before it starts, the theaters are shut, and your pocket holds eleven dollars? If you are Handy, you borrow a tent, borrow a boat, and hire seven actors to sail the Long Island Sound with you. Handy is a strolling player with a huge shock of red hair, a bass drum, and a talent for talking himself out of trouble.
A Pirate of Parts is a comic novel by Richard Neville, built from the road life of American actors in the ragtime years. It gives you quick, funny schemes, each with a lesson about nerve, luck, and loyalty.

A strolling actor starts a show on credit
Handy is an actor by trade and a jack of all trades by need. He has been a sailor, bartender, soldier, and clown, and he claims he can play anything from Macbeth to an elephant's hind leg.
The summer is a bad one for actors. Most men would stop for lack of money. Handy counts his assets instead: a friend's canvas tent, another friend's sailing vessel called the Gem of the Ocean, twenty dollars of credit with a printer, and eleven dollars in his pocket. He recruits seven old stock company players on the Rialto.
The first stop is Staten Island, for one night of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Then a sheriff appears to say the company has no license. Handy leads him to a saloon, orders beer and cigars, finds he has no cash, and jumps the back fence to run for the boat. Handy treats an empty pocket as a puzzle for nerve to solve.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
