About this book
In the Canadian Northwest, the land is the hardest opponent—and sharing a trail means sharing the danger.
Two on the Trail by Hulbert Footner brings adventure and romance into the wild Canadian Northwest. Rivers, forests and open country shape the journey. Across these wide distances, travel becomes a test of endurance, and the pull of pursuit gives the trail an edge beyond the struggle to keep moving.
At the heart of this northern adventure is the bond between two people facing hard country together. Cold, hunger, injury and exhaustion give survival its urgency. Romance grows through shared hardship, where depending on another person for warmth, food and safety makes trust a necessity before it becomes a feeling.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A lunch that changes a journey
Garth Pevensey, a reporter for the New York Leader, walks into Papps's restaurant in Prince George and is shown to a tiny booth already holding a farmer and his wife. Soon a slender young woman with chestnut hair and blue eyes is seated opposite him, the last free place in the house. Both of them keep their faces blank, as strangers should. Each is secretly delighted and each is secretly watching the other.
The farmer and his wife cannot bear the stiff silence and hurry out, leaving the two alone. The girl is furious with Garth for being so calm, and she is dying to laugh. When she wants the salt, she will not ask for it, and she thanks him in a tone full of indignation. Garth has no idea what he has done wrong.
