About this book
What does a child learn when the people meant to protect her use her to hurt each other?
Maisie Farange is about six when her parents divorce. Ida and Beale turn their daughter into a messenger, a weapon, and a burden. In Henry James's What Maisie Knew, new marriages bring new attachments, but no simple refuge. Maisie watches the adults quarrel and deceive, taking in more than they suspect and understanding less than she needs.
Around her stand two governesses: charming Miss Overmore and anxious, devoted Mrs Wix. Her young stepfather, Sir Claude, offers kindness, though his wish to please everyone leaves him weak. James stays close to Maisie's mind, letting you notice the gap between what she sees and what she can name. Affection becomes hard to separate from possession.

In short
What happens when a court splits a child between two people who hate each other? In What Maisie Knew, little Maisie Farange goes to her parents in turn, six months with each, after a divorce that all of London enjoys.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A court cuts one child in half
The novel opens after a long, messy divorce. The ruling says Beale Farange should keep his small daughter, but he must also repay twenty-six hundred pounds that he cannot find. A compromise follows. Maisie will spend six months with her father, then six months with her mother, Ida.
James treats this as a joke played by justice. The child is split like the baby in the story of King Solomon, despite a relative's offer to take her in. Both parents are good-looking, loud and worthless as examples. The narrator says plainly what Maisie is for. She is a little cup in which the parents can mix their sharpest acids.

What is What Maisie Knew about?
It follows Maisie Farange, a small girl in London whose divorced parents share her by half years. She sees and learns far more than they suppose as stepparents, governesses and rivals compete for her.
Who is Mrs. Wix?
Mrs. Wix is Maisie's second governess, a poor, odd woman in old glasses who lost her own child. She loves Maisie dearly and tries to teach her right from wrong.
What does the title mean?
The title points to the gap between what Maisie understands and what the adults think she knows. She learns, early and quietly, about their secrets and quarrels, and the novel follows what she does with that knowledge.
