About this book
What holds a soldier steady when love calls him home and duty leads him into battle?
In Under the Red Dragon, James Grant brings a love story into the world of the Crimean War. British soldiers travel far from home to a country most have never imagined. Through camp life, long marches and battle, the novel follows the strain between private affection and the flag a soldier has sworn to follow.
The red dragon is the old emblem of Wales, and Grant honors the Welsh soldiers who serve beneath it. His warm, patriotic adventure places honor, loyalty to comrades and love of country beside the hope of a safe return. The campaign tests courage, but the pull of home gives the military story its personal stakes.

A Welsh invitation tempts a poor lieutenant
The story opens at Winchester in the summer of 1854. Harry Hardinge, a lieutenant of twenty-five, sits in his bare barrack room with two friends, Phil Caradoc and Charley Gwynne. Then his servant brings a letter, and Harry falls silent.
The letter comes from Sir Madoc Lloyd, an old Welsh baronet who has known Harry since he was a boy. He invites him to Craigaderyn Court for a birthday fête. He adds, almost in passing, that Lady Estelle Cressingham is a guest, and that a stranger named Hawkesby Guilfoyle seems far too attentive to her.
