About this book
What can love protect when private ambition and public power share the same troubled world?
In A Flower in a Sea of Sin, Pu Zeng brings together Jin Wenqing, a distinguished scholar and official, and Fu Caiyun, a courtesan who becomes his concubine. Their relationship crosses different paths through society, placing attraction and ambition within the political troubles of China’s late Qing dynasty.
Jin’s diplomatic career takes the story beyond China, where contact with Europe exposes the gap between inherited assumptions and international realities. At home, foreign demands and new political ideas challenge the ruling class. Officials, intellectuals, and people drawn toward change widen the story’s view of a society under pressure.

In short
A Flower in a Sea of Sin by Zeng Pu is a Chinese novel started in the early years of the twentieth century. A lover of freedom learns that the Island of Slaves and Pleasure, which sank in 1904, was really China.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A sinking island opens the story
The novel begins as a fable. A Sea of Sin holds the Island of Slaves and Pleasure, whose people breathe stale air and think themselves free. In 1904 the island sinks, and it proves to have been joined to China all along.
A lover of freedom wanders through Shanghai, where people play mahjong while news of war arrives. He receives a scroll of strange history and passes it to a friend who will publish it chapter by chapter. The frame sets the tone: a nation asleep in its pleasures and a narrator who means to wake it.

What is A Flower in a Sea of Sin about?
It follows the scholar Jin Wenqing and the courtesan Fu Caiyun through the last decades of the Qing dynasty, from examinations and embassies abroad to wars with France and Japan, court quarrels, and the first revolutionary plots.
Who is Fu Caiyun in the novel?
She is a young courtesan of striking beauty who becomes Wenqing's concubine and goes with him to Europe. Clever, restless and fond of pleasure, she becomes a social success abroad and later seeks her own path in Shanghai.
Are the characters based on real people?
Many are. The author drew on real statesmen, scholars and revolutionaries, often under changed names. Sun Yat-sen, Tang Changsu and Earl Weiyi appear, so readers meet recognisable figures from the late Qing alongside invented characters.
