About this book

What if saving someone you love means breaking rules that protect everyone else?

Ojo lives with his quiet uncle, Unc Nunkie, in a remote corner of Munchkin country. Food runs short, and Ojo believes he is unlucky. Then a magical accident turns his uncle and Margolotte into marble statues. The Crooked Magician can make a remedy, but Ojo must search across Oz for rare ingredients.

Along comes Scraps, a girl made from scraps of cloth and meant to serve in a household. Ojo adds extra qualities to her brains before she comes to life, and obedience is not her strength. With a vain glass cat and the square-bodied Woozy among his companions, his rescue quest becomes a tangle of clashing ideas and difficult choices.

What you’ll discover

  • A mind of her own Meet Scraps, whose unruly imagination makes her far more than the servant Margolotte intends.
  • Love against the rules Follow Ojo as saving his uncle comes into conflict with other people's safety.
  • Companions full of opinions Enjoy playful arguments among creatures with sharply different ideas about their own importance.
  • A search across Oz Travel with an unlucky boy whose hope rests on finding rare ingredients.
  • Straw meets patchwork Find the Scarecrow in lively company as Scraps brings her inventive mind into his world.
