About this book
What makes a person admirable when pride stands between love and the courage to act?
In The Man, Bram Stoker turns to romance among England’s upper classes. Two people care for each other, but affection alone cannot bring them together. Their own pride, the expectations placed upon them, and the world they inhabit hold them apart. As their bond grows, the pressure on it grows too.
This love story asks what character means when feeling and convention pull in different directions. Stoker explores duty and the roles society gives men and women. Even the title poses a challenge: does being a man rest on rank, strength, or manners—or on how a person chooses to behave?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A girl wants to be God
The story opens in a village churchyard on a June afternoon. Stephen Norman, not yet fourteen, sits on a tombstone in a red hunting habit beside Harold An Wolf, her friend and mentor, who is five years older. They overhear two village girls. One would rather be an angel than God. The other wants to be God and give the orders.
Stephen sides with the second girl at once. Harold doubts that such power would make her happy, and he says the hardest part of ruling is being fair. Stephen bristles when he claims that women find justice difficult. She argues hotly, and he answers with examples that she half accepts.
