About this book
What if a court’s most carefully hidden desires could speak—and no one could silence them?
In Denis Diderot’s The Indiscreet Toys, Sultan Mangogul is young, bored, and surrounded by flattery. Then the genie Cucufa gives him a magic ring. It makes a woman’s most private part speak frankly about her love life, turning courtly secrets into scandalous comedy.
Congo, Mangogul’s kingdom, is a thin disguise for France and the court of Louis XV. As the sultan pursues his experiments, his quick-witted favorite Mirzoza offers candid comments. Between bawdy episodes, their conversations turn to books, music, art, and ideas. Beneath the laughter lies a pointed question: why does society work so hard to hide desire?

In short
What would you do with a ring that makes any woman you point it at confess her secrets aloud, not with her mouth but with another part of her body? That is the gift the Genius Cucufa gives Mangogul, sultan of Congo, on a dull afternoon when he and his favorite, Mirzoza, have nothing left to say.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A bored sultan receives a dangerous ring
When Prince Mangogul is born, an astrologer named Codindo cannot read the stars at all, and he admits it to the sultan's face. He says the reign will be happy if it proves long, and the old king is not amused.
Mangogul grows into a ruler who wins battles and founds academies. Yet he is restless. Mirzoza has been his favorite for years, and they have run out of fresh stories. One day he yawns, and she names his illness at once. It is boredom. She proposes learning the secret affairs of the court, and Mangogul summons the Genius Cucufa, who arrives carried through the air by two horned owls.

What is The Indiscreet Toys about?
It is a satirical fantasy about Mangogul, sultan of Congo, who receives a magic ring that makes the private parts of women speak their secrets. Each use of the ring becomes a trial that mocks the court, priests and scholars.
What does Toys mean in the title?
Toys is the book's playful, polite word for a woman's sexual organ. The title joke is that these bijoux speak, so the author can say what polite society hides while keeping a light tone.
Is The Indiscreet Toys set in Africa?
Only in disguise. Congo, Banza and the sultan stand in for France, Paris and the king. Diderot pretends to translate an African chronicle so that he can laugh at the court and its habits.
