About this book
On this Mississippi steamboat, a stranger may ask for your money—or something harder to recover: your trust.
It is April Fools’ Day aboard the Fidèle, bound downriver toward New Orleans. Passengers from every walk of American life meet strangers with causes to press and stories to sell. In Herman Melville’s The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade, a request for charity becomes a test of judgment. Who deserves belief, and what does kindness risk?
Black Guinea begs for coins while the crowd weighs his honesty. Pitch, a suspicious Missouri bachelor, prides himself on resisting deception. Frank Goodman offers warmth and friendship. Through sharp dialogue and uneasy comedy, Melville explores the gap between generous words and selfish acts. He gives you no easy way to separate honest faith from a swindler’s trick.

A mute stranger boards the Fidèle
The story opens at sunrise on the first of April in St. Louis. A man in cream-colored clothes, with flaxen hair and a white fur hat, appears at the landing with no luggage and no friends. He steps onto the steamer Fidèle, which is about to leave for New Orleans.
Near the captain's office he finds a reward notice for an impostor. Peddlers sell money belts and tales of bandits. He holds charity messages beside the notice. The crowd shoves him and flattens his hat. He never fights back.

What is The Confidence-Man about?
It follows a series of passengers on a Mississippi steamboat, each asking others for trust and money. Through those meetings, Melville explores charity, faith, and fraud, and he leaves open whether one man or many are behind the masks.
Who is the confidence man in the book?
The title suggests a trickster who changes coats and names. A silent stranger opens the story, and later figures such as an herb doctor and a cosmopolitan appear. Melville never states plainly that they are one person.
When was The Confidence-Man written and is it a true story?
It is a work of fiction. It is a satire set on a steamboat on the Mississippi, using invented characters and tales to comment on real habits of trust and deceit.
