About this book

What if love arrives when you no longer expect anyone to choose you?

In Sonnets from the Portuguese, Elizabeth Barrett Browning turns an unexpected courtship into forty-four intimate love poems. She lives with illness in her father’s London home and does not expect to be loved. As Robert Browning courts her, the speaker of these sonnets faces a difficult question: can she trust affection she scarcely believes she deserves?

The sequence moves through hesitation, fear, and growing trust, with love weighed against death, family, and faith. From the opening poems, shadowed by grief, to the declaration beginning “How do I love thee?”, Browning gives doubt as much room as devotion. The tight Petrarchan sonnet form holds feelings that are anything but simple.

A shut-in poet meets Love instead of Death

The sequence opens with a small drama. The speaker is reading Theocritus, an ancient Greek poet who imagined the years as gift-bearers. She cannot see her own years that way. To her they are melancholy years, each one flinging a shadow across her path.

What is Sonnets from the Portuguese about?

It is a sequence of forty-four love poems in which a woman who has lived in grief and seclusion comes to trust a man's love. The poems follow her doubts, her gifts, her fears and her growing happiness.

Why is it called Sonnets from the Portuguese?

The title is a gentle disguise. The poems are not translations, though the title suggests so. Portuguese was Robert Browning's affectionate name for the poet, so the title hints at a private joke between the two.

When were the sonnets written and published?

They were written around the time Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning were courting, in the mid 1840s, and published in 1850. They are true to the poet's own experience, though they are poems and not a diary.
