About this book
What happens when a troop of joking scouts takes its skills beyond the comforts of camp?
In Roy Blakeley's Bee-line Hike, Percy Keese Fitzhugh brings together outdoor adventure and boyhood humor. Roy and his fellow scouts head out on a hike that calls on what they learn in camp. The trail gives them room to test their skills, trade jokes and show how well they look after one another.
Roy tells the story himself, with wordplay, silly comparisons and plenty of teasing banter. Beneath the laughter lie the scout ideals of loyalty, helpfulness and fair play. The boys face the challenge of putting those ideals into practice, where knowing a knot or following a trail matters alongside keeping your good cheer.

A vow made over peanuts
Roy Blakeley leads the Silver Fox Patrol, and he is left to look after Pee-wee Harris, a Raven scout who turns up on his porch dressed like a walking hardware store. Pee-wee has tried to win a boy named Warde Hollister for the patrol, and Warde only laughed.
Then Westy Martin spots a big poplar tree on a far ridge, in a straight line from the porch. He proposes a bee-line hike, due west, turning aside for nothing, even if they must go through buildings.
