About this book
What is love worth in a world where duty rules your choices and honour can cost your life?
In Red Eve, H. Rider Haggard brings adventure and romance to fourteenth-century England. Knights, feuds, abbeys and sudden violence shape the world of a love that meets stubborn opposition. Birth and duty carry great weight here. Choosing whom to love means facing a society where a person's life is never entirely their own.
Faithful friends stand beside love in this tale of daring and loyalty. Haggard explores the strength of bonds under strain, in a land ruled by great lords and church power. Over this medieval world hangs the shadow of the Black Death, giving questions of honour, devotion and survival a deeper urgency.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two cousins meet on frozen ground
The book opens far away in the East. A man in a red cloak, led by a dancing woman, boards a ship with crimson sails as a plague lifts from a great city. A voice from the dark tells the crowd that this man, Murgh, serves a Master, and that life and death are not in human hands. Then the story turns to England.
On a bitter February evening in 1346, Hugh de Cressi meets his cousin Eve Clavering in the Blythburgh marshes near Dunwich. It is his twenty-third birthday. Eve wears red, as she always does, and the whole county calls her Red Eve. The two families share a great-grandmother, but the Claverings hold the land while the de Cressis have grown rich on wool, fishing fleets and ferry tolls.
