About this book
What happens to a dream of love when open country puts distance and hardship in its path?
In When Dreams Come True, Ritter Brown brings romance and adventure into the orbit of the American Southwest. Desert, mesa, canyon and wide sky frame a world of hard travel and strong longing. Small settlements lie far from the cities of the East. The pull is toward a larger life, and a love that must endure distance and risk.
Brown belongs to the early twentieth-century world of American popular fiction, when magazines and books carry romance and western adventure to a wide public. His warm, direct, openly emotional style gives this romance its old-fashioned appeal. The title holds out the promise of fulfilled dreams; the storytelling tradition puts hardship between longing and happiness.

In short
What would make a man with twenty million dollars and a bright diplomatic career ride into the Mexican desert and refuse to turn back? In When Dreams Come True, the answer begins with a glimpse.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A restless captain returns to the desert
The book opens in August on a broken mesa in Chihuahua. Captain Jack Forest and his servant José rest beside a spring, close to a skull bleached white by the sun. Forest rides Starlight, a chestnut Arabian that once stood guard over him against wolves and vultures when fever left him helpless in this very spot.
Chapter two supplies his past. He studied at Harvard, served as a diplomat in London and St. Petersburg, and fought in Cuba and the Philippines. He was about to become minister to Greece and marry Blanch Lennox. Then, on a twilight trail, he met the woman on the black horse.
