About this book
Who makes the rules of a brotherhood—and what happens when its members disagree?
In The Principles of Masonic Law, Albert Gallatin Mackey examines how Freemasonry governs itself. Lodges and Grand Lodges face disputes over admission, authority, and discipline. His legal handbook seeks order in those disagreements, asking where Masonic law comes from, who may change it, and who must obey it.
Mackey moves from written and unwritten sources to the powers of Grand Lodges, local lodges, and their officers. He also considers the individual member: who may join, what belonging requires, and how offenses should be tried. At stake is the balance between a brotherhood's authority and its members' rights.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Masonic law has written and unwritten sources
Mackey begins by asking what Masonic law actually is. He argues that it is not one neat code handed down at a single moment. It is built from several layers that have gathered over centuries. Some of it is written down, in old manuscripts, in constitutions and in the regulations of Grand Lodges. Some of it rests on ancient custom that no one can date.
Among the written sources, Mackey gives weight to the Old Charges, the medieval documents in which the craft of stonemasons set down its duties. He also looks at the Constitutions that Grand Lodges adopted after the early eighteenth century. These texts show what the brotherhood believed about itself, and they supply many of the rules that later lodges relied on. Mackey treats them as evidence of a continuous tradition rather than as isolated documents.
