About this book

What happens when a poet turns desire, wounded pride, and polite society into targets for laughter?

In Erotic, Burlesque, and Satirical Poems, Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage brings his sharp tongue to bodies, lovers, pompous figures, and literary enemies. This collection gathers erotic verse, burlesque, and satire: poetry that speaks openly where polite verse looks away, and finds laughter in appetites it prefers to hide.

Bocage is known for tender sonnets, but here you meet the poet whose frankness shocks polite society. His poems pass from hand to hand before they can appear openly in print. Literary quarrels sharpen the attack, including his feud with José Agostinho de Macedo, a priest and writer who answers him in kind.

What you’ll discover

  • Desire without polite disguises Meet lovers and bodily appetites in poems that trade coyness for wit and frankness.
  • Solemn poetry turned upside down Discover burlesque that brings lofty subjects low and gives humble things a grand treatment.
  • Rivals caught in rhyme Follow a sharp literary tongue as Bocage takes aim at fellow poets and fools.
  • Laughter at the pompous Enjoy mockery that punctures dignity and makes self-important figures the butt of the joke.
  • Beyond the tender sonnet Explore the bawdy, combative side of a Portuguese poet remembered for his sonnets.

Who will love it

You will enjoy it if you like satire with a sharp edge, the culture of Lisbon around 1800, the Enlightenment arguing with the Church, and poets who loved to shock and to laugh.

What is Erotic, Burlesque, and Satirical Poems by Bocage about?

It gathers the poems left out of the 1853 Lisbon edition of Bocage: comic epics, verse letters, an Ovid imitation, fifty-two sonnets, light verse and an elegy, with editor's notes on many pieces.

Did Bocage really write all these poems?

Not all of them. The editor says that Winter Night and the Art of Love come from Sebastião Xavier Botelho, marks some sonnets as doubtful, and notes that some pieces may belong to Pedro José Constancio.

Why was the Epistle to Marilia important?

It argues that hell is an invention of tyrants and priests. According to the notes, it served as evidence when Bocage was arrested in 1797, held in jail and then passed to the Inquisition.
