About this book
In a town thick with mill smoke, love means little unless you can learn to see another person's world.
Margaret Hale leaves the quiet Hampshire countryside when her father gives up his church position on grounds of conscience. In Milton, machinery fills the air with noise, and workers crowd the streets. Here she meets John Thornton, a self-made mill owner whose pride and beliefs clash with her own.
Friendship with union man Nicholas Higgins and his ailing daughter Bessy brings Margaret closer to the people behind the mills. As wages fall and workers strike, questions of fairness become urgent. In Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South, her growing attachment to Thornton cannot be separated from the divisions around them.

A Comfortable Girlhood Ends in Hampshire
The novel opens in a London house full of silk and wedding talk. Margaret has lived there since childhood with her cousin Edith, who is about to marry. Margaret watches it all with a little distance, then goes home to Helstone, the southern village where her father is the clergyman.
There Henry Lennox, a London lawyer, asks her to marry him. She refuses at once, because she feels no love for him. The refusal is right, yet it is also a little proud.
