About this book

What makes a person admirable when pride stands between love and the courage to act?

In The Man, Bram Stoker turns to romance among England’s upper classes. Two people care for each other, but affection alone cannot bring them together. Their own pride, the expectations placed upon them, and the world they inhabit hold them apart. As their bond grows, the pressure on it grows too.

This love story asks what character means when feeling and convention pull in different directions. Stoker explores duty and the roles society gives men and women. Even the title poses a challenge: does being a man rest on rank, strength, or manners—or on how a person chooses to behave?

What you’ll discover

  • Love under pressure Follow a bond that has time to deepen before pride and expectation test it.
  • Character beyond rank Consider whether social standing matters more than conduct when a person’s worth is at stake.
  • The weight of duty Explore the demands placed on men and women when private feelings meet public expectations.
  • Feeling without restraint Enter a romance of grand speeches and a narrator unafraid to guide your feelings.
  • Another side of Stoker Meet the author of Dracula through an earnest story of love, pride, and courage.

Is it for you?

This book suits readers of Dracula who want to see another side of Stoker, and anyone who enjoys earnest romance about class and character. If you want a quiet, restrained or modern style, you may find it less suited.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 4

A romance from the author of Dracula

Many people know Stoker only through his vampire novel. The Man shows that he wrote in other modes too. It belongs to the romantic fiction of the years just after Queen Victoria's death, a time when readers enjoyed stories of high feeling, strong moral choices and well-born people tested by love.
