Chapter 1

Understand, then, what I have to tell you about the hours of the day and night, and how it is fitting that you should offer supplication to God and pray to Him at each of His appointed seasons. My Creator taught me all of this. He told me the names of all the wild animals and beasts and the birds of heaven, and then God made me to understand the number of the hours of the day and night, and He told me how the angels praise Him. Understand, therefore, my son, that at the first hour of the day the prayer of my children ascends to God. At the second hour the prayer and petition of the angels take place. At the third hour the birds of heaven praise Him. At the fourth hour the spiritual beings worship Him. At the fifth hour all the wild beasts and animals salute Him. At the sixth hour the petition of the Cherubim takes place. At the seventh hour all the angels enter the presence of God and go forth from it, for at this hour the prayer of every living thing ascends to God. At the eighth hour the shining inhabitants of heaven praise Him. At the ninth hour the angels of God who stand before the throne of the Most High do homage to Him. At the tenth hour the Holy Spirit overshadows the waters, and the devils flee and remove themselves from them. If the Holy Spirit did not overshadow the waters at this hour every day, no one could drink of them, for their flesh would be destroyed by the evil devils. And if a priest takes water at this hour and mixes it with holy oil, and anoints the sick and those possessed by foul spirits with the mixture, they will be healed of their sickness. At the eleventh hour the glorifying of the righteous takes place. And at the twelfth hour God the Most High receives the prayers and petitions of the children of men.
