About this book
A colt runs wild in the mountains, and an unlikely rider joins a chase that tests nerve against rough country.
At Harrison’s cattle station, word spreads that a valuable colt has escaped and joined wild horses in the hills. Riders gather to bring him back, including the skilled stockman Clancy of the Overflow. But the horses have reached rough mountain country near Mount Kosciusko, where the hunt demands more than a willingness to follow.
Then a man from the Snowy River country arrives on a small horse, and the others doubt him. In The Man from Snowy River, A. B. Paterson turns this encounter into a ballad of speed, danger and nerve. Its strong beat and long, galloping lines carry you from the talk at the station toward the hard chase ahead.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Paterson turns bush talk into ringing verse
A. B. Paterson, called Banjo, gathered these ballads from the Australian bush and offered them to readers across Australasia. Most first appeared in the Bulletin, a Sydney paper, and some are printed here for the first time. In a short prelude he calls them rough stories picked up on the overland routes of the west.
That plain voice is the point. The speakers are drovers, jockeys, shearers and station hands, and they talk the way such people talk, with slang, jokes and a good deal of bragging. Paterson fits their stories into beats that carry you along. The map is the country of New South Wales, from the Snowy mountains to the Castlereagh plains, with small towns like Dandaloo and Walgett.
