About this book

At Sunnybank, a collie's courage is measured by what he does for the people he loves.

In Albert Payson Terhune's linked stories, Lad guards a country home set among woods, lake, and lawn. Strong and calm, he gives his loyalty to the Master and the Mistress. Strangers, rival dogs, and danger test that bond, asking him to choose between his own wishes and his duty.

Lad: A Dog follows the collie through the seasons of life at Sunnybank. His mate, Lady, shares the care of home and young, while their headstrong son, Wolf, must learn his place. Based on a real dog, Lad remains a creature of senses and instincts, seen by a storyteller who knows collies closely.

What is Lad: A Dog about?

It follows Lad, a noble collie at a lakeside home called The Place, through twelve linked tales of rivals, rescues, dog shows, a long journey home, sheep, thieves and family life, always centered on his loyalty to his owners.

Is Lad: A Dog a true story?

The author says the main events in nearly all the Lad stories are true and that Lad was a real dog. The tales appeared in magazines before being gathered into this book, and Terhune tells them in his own voice.

What is the difference between an owner and a Master in the book?

Terhune says anyone with money can own a dog, but only a person the dog accepts wholeheartedly becomes its Master. The idea runs through many chapters and is used to praise the Master and mock Glure.
