About this book
At the court of James V, a king’s favour can vanish—and love and loyalty face dangerous tests.
In James Grant’s Jane Seton; Or, the King's Advocate, a young woman of the Scottish gentry stands at the heart of a troubled court. Jane’s love and loyalty are tested in a world where noble families watch one another, and royal favour offers no certain safety.
Scotland under James V is a country shaped by rival houses and uneasy ties between king and nobles. The title also points to the King's Advocate, the law officer who acts for the crown. Grant brings these tensions into a historical romance, with a narrator who pauses to explain the past as the story unfolds.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A queen arrives and old hatreds show
The story opens on May 19, 1537, when Edinburgh rings its bells for King James V and his French bride, Magdalene. The crowds cheer, but the Douglas faction, driven into exile by the king, watches in silence. Among the watchers is the disguised Earl of Ashkirk, with a price on his head.
From a flower-hung balcony, the earl's mother, the proud old countess, and his sister Jane Seton watch the procession. Jane throws a rose to the king and wins a smile from a man who hates her family. Her lover, Sir Roland Vipont, master of the king's ordnance, rides at the king's side and bows to her in secret.
