About this book

What happens when the pull of love meets the pull of home?

In Sunstroke and Homesickness, Emilia Pardo Bazán brings together two love stories of passion and longing. This classic of Spanish literature places love beside the pull of home, inviting you to consider what draws people toward another person—and toward the place they call their own.

The two stories, Sunstroke and Homesickness, offer a way into those competing desires. Read them together for their shared concerns: romance, yearning, and attachment to home. The appeal lies in that meeting of feelings, where love is not the only thing that holds the heart.

In short

A single hot feast day can undo years of careful behavior. Both are set in late nineteenth century Madrid, among Spaniards far from the green north where they were born.

A widow wakes and faces her conscience

The book opens with Asís Taboada waking in a Madrid bedroom with a pounding head and an aching body. Her maid Angela brings linden tea and says it must be a sunstroke. Asís clings to that excuse, because she would rather blame the weather than herself.

What is Sunstroke and Homesickness about?

It joins two tales set in Madrid. In the first, a Galician widow is drawn into an affair with an Andalusian charmer after a feast day. In the second, a homesick Galician servant disturbs a mother and her sheltered son.

Who is Esclavitud in Homesickness?

She is a young Galician servant from a priest's household in Vimieiro. She comes to Madrid in mourning, suffers from morriña, or homesickness, and asks to work for a family from her own land.

What does morriña mean?

Morriña is the Galician word for a deep homesickness, a sadness and listlessness that afflicts people far from their native land. In the book, characters describe it as an illness that can sometimes ease with a reminder of home.
