About this book
What if a poem could hold a whole crowd—and still speak directly to you?
In Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman brings poetry into streets, crowds and working lives. His long lines follow the sound of American speech rather than neat rhyme. Song of Myself turns one speaking voice into a gathering of people, while the body and the soul stand on equal ground.
I Hear America Singing gives workers a place in the poem, from the carpenter to the boatman. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry watches gulls, tides and passing crowds, reaching toward connection across time. The Calamus poems explore comradeship, while the Civil War brings wounded soldiers and poems for Lincoln into this wide, changing world.

In short
What if a poet walked into a crowd and tried to sing for everyone in it at once? That is the daring move at the start of Leaves of Grass.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
The poet promises one voice for everyone
Whitman opens with a cluster of short poems called Inscriptions, and they work like a doorway. The first claims one simple, separate person who still speaks for the whole mass of people. It insists that the body from head to toe deserves the Muse, and that women are sung as much as men.
In As I Pondered in Silence, a stern ghost of old-world poets tells him that war is the only theme that lasts. He answers that he too sings of war, a larger one fought inside his book, for body and for soul. In Poets to Come, he asks a new generation to justify him, since he only points the way.
