About this book
On Dartmoor, love and family secrets share a landscape of granite, bogs and mist.
Eve, a Gothic romance by Sabine Baring-Gould, takes you into the lonely moorland of Devon. Granite tors rise above wide slopes, sudden weather changes the scene, and old stone circles mark the land. This is more than a backdrop: the moor shapes the lives of those who call it home.
Love, secrets and the price of freedom lie at the heart of this Victorian romance. The pull of personal desire meets the weight of family, rank and custom. Baring-Gould brings his close knowledge of Devon to a world where place matters, family histories cast shadows, and freedom raises the question of what must be given up.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stranger comes for his daughter
The story opens at Morwell House, an old hunting lodge of the abbots of Tavistock. Ignatius Jordan sits with a gun and a sleeping baby when Ezekiel Babb walks in and demands to see his daughter Eve.
Babb is a hard, greedy man who hates the foreign, restless blood of his late wife. He tells how he married a dancing girl he met at a fair, and how his own Eve ran off with players. Jordan admits that Eve has gone and that her baby girl lies in the cradle.
