About this book
What can a generous heart win in a world that measures people by money and birth?
Emily Fox-Seton lives in a tiny rented room in London and earns her living doing errands for the rich. A poor gentlewoman in her thirties, she has no fortune and no one to lean on. Yet her busy days leave room for small joys, and she gives kindness as readily as she gives her time.
Her wealthy employer, Lady Maria Bayne, brings Emily into a country house where new chances open. There she meets Lord Walderhurst, a reserved nobleman accustomed to attention for his rank. Frances Hodgson Burnett draws this gentle romance toward darker suspense, asking what goodness is worth when wealth and birth seem to count for everything.

Picture a tall woman in a brown skirt stepping off a two-penny bus into London mud. She is pleased because she has found a way to add a yard of matching cloth to last year's skirt.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Emily lives by being cheerfully useful
Emily Fox-Seton is tall, well bred, and almost without money. Her mother's small annuity died with her mother. She has worked as an assistant teacher, a nursery governess, and a companion to a sour old woman, and through it all she keeps her good humor.
In London she lodges in Mortimer Street with Mrs. Cupp and her daughter Jane. Her room holds a cot disguised as a couch and a small black kettle that sings on the hob. She earns her bread by writing notes, finding servants, and hunting for bargains. She asks for nothing and enjoys everything, and that is why people like her.
