About this book
What does it take to turn a gift for music into a life of your own?
Dorothy loves music, but a gift is only a beginning. In Evelyn Raymond's Dorothy's Triumph, a young violinist's hopes reach beyond school toward the concert stage. School days, loyal friends and small rivalries surround her as she learns what it means to take her talent seriously.
At the heart of this gentle story is a question larger than musical success: how does a girl find her own voice? Dorothy grows through mistakes and the steady work of learning an art. Her ambition gives the story its direction, while friendship makes room for courage and hard truths.

Dorothy comes home to a worried aunt
Dorothy Calvert rides a train toward Baltimore, coming home from school in Canada. With her are Jim Barlow, a friend from her childhood, and Ephraim, the old servant of her great-aunt, Mrs. Betty Calvert. Dorothy was once left as a baby with an aunt who did not want her, and now she calls her good fortune too strange to be true.
Jim has a plan. He wants to learn electricity from the ground up and begin as an apprentice in Baltimore. Dorothy believes in him, since the word fail is not in his vocabulary. She promises him a big room for a laboratory.
